Guys I attended a community meeting on Storms River Township last night. There is a spread of drinking, drugging and petrol sniffing amongst the teenagers of the loctaion.
I was looking at the teenagers sitting on ther front two rows of the meeting, being lectured by wealthy white folk trying to tell them what to do and what not to do.
When I spoke I said 'guys if I had to grow up in these conditions, with no school, no shoes, no hot and cold running water, drunkenness in abundance, loud music pumping out all around me every night, with anything up to 15 people all living in a 6 meter square shack, I would drink, smoke and sniff anything I could get myn hands on to escape .... and I don't know how to help'.
As I walked home, I saw empty plots of land over grown with weeds, doing nothing, 200 meteres away from a dying generation.
I had this thought:
If we could aquire any one of these plots and build a secure fence around it, we could clear it, flatten it and lay it with an all-weather astro turf type flooring. One plot would be ample space for a Cricket net, a 5-a-side soccer pitch, volleyball court and a couple of tennis courts. At the entrance to the flood-lit arena, we have a urine testing station with my team and I in supervision. Entrance is allowed only if the multi-screen drug test proves negative for alchol and drugs. That way, drinking and drugging does not BECOME their nightmare social life, its COSTS them their social life and dreams.
I feel hopeless asking, but wont some one offer something to help?
Some time ago I tracked a guy down in Germany who owns a plot right next to the location and he agreed to sell me the plot at a very reasonable rate, but no one answered the plea. Troops, I will neither give up nor go away, these kids need a tomorrow.

The plot of land was valued at an estimated R180,000. I made contact with the owner and explained that our aim was to create a Trust and to purchase the plot for the development of an outreach programme targetting the youth of this poor community. The Jude 23 Trust was formed and we offerd the owner R90, 000 for the plot. He accepted, I sent out an appeal, R90, 000 came in within three months and we now own the land.
The Fresh Waters Sports Initiative
The 2,120 square meter plot of land stands between the school and the shebeen. It is now ours. At the writing of this article; 15/10/09, we have an urgent need for support, financially and practically. The next phase of The Fresh Waters Sports Initiative - where only those with drug and alcohol free urine are allowed entrance - is to secure the plot with fencing, to remove all the felled trees and roots and to level the ground.
