Family Empowerment Intervention Procedure.

________________________________________________

All too often we get distraught family members ringing us or emailing us with the same question:

“Is there anything I can do to stop the madness”?

The offending addict in the family is slowly dying in front of them, but all attempts at reasoning have ended in outbursts of defensive aggression from the guilty one, leaving feelings of guilt within the innocent ones. Family members are left to suffer in silence, damned if they do mention the addiction, damned if they don’t.

The team of Storms River Rehab would like to suggest the following procedure of intervention.

Step One

Make contact with an affordable Department of Health registered rehab to which you would like to send the offending addict. Secure a bed-space and prepare transportation for the day of intervention. Prepare a bag of immediate essentials for the offending addicts first few days away from home.

Step Two

1. Make a list of suspected Legal Infringements: Jewellery items missing, cell phones missing, furniture items missing, car used without permission.
Get as many infringements as you can onto a computer print out document and have it witnessed and signed by several family members.

2. Make a list of Physical Infringements: Your need for anti-depressants, their
erratic eating patterns, weight loss, lack of personal hygiene, lack of respectful dress code, physical abuses.
Get as many infringements as you can onto a computer print out document and have it witnessed and signed by several family members.

3. Make a list of Moral Infringements: Bad language within the home, laziness, aggressive behaviour within the home, intimidation of parents and siblings, persistent breaking of basic in-house boundaries.
Get as many infringements as you can onto a computer print out document and have it witnessed and signed by several family members.

Step Three

Arrange a meeting at a neutral venue (Church office, Ploice station or Doctors surgery) with Internet access.

As far as is possible invite:

1. Two or Three Family members
2. Family doctor
3. One or Two Police officers
4. 1 Pastor
5. The offending addict

Invite one of the police officers to read out the Infringement Indictments
Invite each family member to speak of their fears and hurts
Invite the doctor to voice an assessment
Designate the primary family member to then read out a statement of ultimatum

ULTIMATUM

“Either receive therapeutic help for the addiction at the rehab of our choice today, or know, here and now in front all here present, that a section 21 order for 12-months to a state rehab will be imposed at the next infringement of any kind".

The offending addict has no voice in the meeting

Invite the offending addict to view the rehab website, and decide.

If the offending addict agrees to receive therapy, the journey to rehab should begin at that moment.
