Fozen Feelings

Many of us who have ended up in addictions had difficulty expressing our feelings or even realising we have them. For fair reason or foul at some point we learned how to harbour some deep emotional pain. Maybe it was an abuse issue or the death of a much needed parent and the feelings were simply too much to allow. We suppress.

Maybe we have had other feelings that were met with disapproval, ridicule, anger and rejection, and our perception became that all our feelings would be met in this way. For pure reason or poor, the feelings freeze. Freezing the feelings feels like a coping mechanism to begin with, but this soon ‘matures’ into what feels like a survival issue. As a result we are now out of touch with our feelings, or we only allow ourselves to have “acceptable” feelings in order to stay safe.

Our true personality can only therefore become distorted as we protect ourselves from the reality of what is happening. Frozen feelings are only the beginning though, they then give birth to an internal life of emotional secrecy which includes resentments, anger, jealousies, irrational fears, exaggerated guilt, and depression; aka Addiction.

In the home we can often see examples of frozen feelings, why not try the following exercise and see if you can identify:

With frozen feelings we become:

Unaware of how we feel because of the distortion within us. We suppress positive feelings, causing depression. We withhold from conversations and struggle with relationships.

Case scenario
I repress my feelings toward my spouse because I don’t want to get hurt. This affects my actions and limits my ability to communicate. This activates my need to isolate and causes me to be accused of being insensitive and unaffectionate. This makes me very lonely.

Self-evaluation
On a scale of one to ten, how much do frozen feelings negatively affect your life? Number one indicates that it has little affect. Number ten indicates that it has great negative affect. Circle where you are today.
